Морозить сопли

Russian slang expressions including the snot

Just a few days left until the winter starts, so let’s dedicate the today’s episode to this topic… well, almost… The topic of this episode is actually сопли which means snot. You’ll be surprised how many things Russians can describe using just this word, including the cold weather. Let’s begin!

Приве́т большу́щий!

A huge hello!

Призна́ться, я не уве́рена, что фра́за, стоя́щая в заголо́вке сего́дняшнего подкаста мо́жет запо́лнить собо́й весь вы́пуск, но она́ мне про́сто о́чень нра́вится. Наве́рное потому́, что хо́лод – э́то то, с чем я ника́к не могу́ смири́ться, живя́ в Петербу́рге.

Frankly speaking, I’m not sure that the phrase in the headline of today’s podcast will be able to fill up the entire episode, but I just really like it. Probably because the cold is something that I can not reconcile while living in Saint-Petersburg.

Со́пли моро́зить – э́то 100% неформа́льное выраже́ние, означа́ющее, как мо́жно догада́ться, “мёрзнуть”. (Со́пли, для тех, кто не знако́м с э́тим сло́вом, э́то то, что у образу́ется у вас в носу́, когда́ вы простужа́етесь :))

“Сопли морозить” is a 100% informal expression meaning, as one can guess, “to be cold”. (“Сопли”, for those who is not familiar with this word, is what forms in your nose when you catch a cold :))

Наприме́р:

For example:

В таку́ю пого́ду гуля́ть – то́лько со́пли моро́зить, никако́го удово́льствия.

Going out in such weather is only to freeze your snot, no pleasure whatsoever.

При сло́ве “моро́зить” сра́зу представля́ется зи́мний хо́лод… одна́ко моро́зить со́пли мо́жно и при температу́ре вы́ше нуля́, гла́вное усло́вие – лишь бы бы́ло хо́лодно. 🙂

When you say “to freeze”, you immediately imagine winter cold … but you can freeze your snot even at temperatures above zero, the main condition – it just has to be cold. 🙂

Кста́ти о сопля́х… Предлага́ю ва́шему внима́нию ещё не́сколько выраже́ний с э́тим сло́вом:

Speaking of the snot … Here is a few more expressions with this word:

Держа́ться на сопля́х – зна́чит почти́ отва́ливаться.

– “Держаться на соплях” (be held on a snot) – means to be almost falling off.

Не клади́ на по́лку ничего́ тяжёлого, она́ де́ржится на сопля́х.

Do not put anything heavy on the shelf, it’s held on by a hair.

Э́то выраже́ние мо́жно употребля́ть и в перено́сном смы́сле:

This expression can also be used figuratively:

Russian Pod 101

Его́ авторите́т де́ржится на сопля́х.

His authority is held on by a hair.

Второ́е выраже́ние – распусти́ть со́пли, что зна́чит “распла́каться”, “жа́ловаться и ныть”.

The second expression is “распустить сопли”, which means “to break in tears”, “to complain and whine”.

Хва́тит уже́ со́пли распуска́ть, ты сам винова́т в том, что случи́лось!

Enough crying already, you are to blame yourself for what happened!

Со́пли мо́жно та́кже жева́ть, не в буква́льном смы́сле, коне́чно. Жева́ть со́пли – зна́чить “мя́млить”, “невня́тно говори́ть” и́ли “ме́длить”, “находи́ться в нереши́тельном состоя́нии”.

Snot can also be chewed, not literally of course. “Жевать сопли” means “to mumble”, “talk indistinctly” or “to procrastinate”, “to be in a state of indecision”.

И те кто вка́лывал, и те кто всё э́то вре́мя со́пли жева́л, получи́ли одина́ковую пре́мию. Где справедли́вость?

Those who worked hard and those who all this time chewed their snot, received the same award. Where’s the justice?

Он о́чень не хоте́л выходи́ть на сце́ну, а когда́ вы́шел, на́чал жева́ть каки́е-то со́пли.

He really did not want to go on stage, but when he went, he started chewing some snot…

Ну, и что́бы совсе́м зако́нчить с сопля́ми, после́днее на сего́дня сло́во: сопля́к. Э́тим гру́бым сло́вом обы́чно обзыва́ют слабохара́ктерных люде́й, тру́сов, и́ли тех, кто си́льно моло́же.

To finish with the snot completely, the last word for today is “сопляк”. This rude word is usually used to name weak-spirited people, cowards, or those who are much younger.

На пове́рку он оказа́лся ню́ней и сопляко́м, а не тем хра́брым мачо, каки́м хоте́л каза́ться.

In fact, he turned out to be a cry-baby and a snot nose, and not the brave macho he wanted to look.

Сопляко́м он никогда́ не́ был, е́сли на́до бы́ло подра́ться – дра́лся.

He was never a snot nose, if he had to fight, he fought.

Он не для того́ здесь сто́лько вре́мени рабо́тал, что́бы како́й-то малоле́тний сопля́к пришёл и всё испо́ртил.

He did not work here so much for some young snot nose to come and ruin everything.

На э́том проща́юсь. Жела́ю вам не мёрзнуть и не боле́ть. До ско́рой встре́чи!

That’s it for now. I wish you not to freeze and stay healthy. See you soon!
