Фиг вам

This episode starts a series dedicated to a very multifunctional Russian slang word фиг. Today you will learn a few expressions with this word that might come in handy in many situations.

До́брое вре́мя су́ток вам, слу́шающим в да́нный моме́нт мой го́лос! Э́то очередно́й вы́пуск подка́ста «О́чень по-ру́сски» и сего́дня я начну́ се́рию, посвящённую о́чень многофункциона́льному ру́сскому сло́ву фиг.

Good time of the day to you, listening at this moment to my voice! This is a new episode of Very Much Russian podcast and today I will begin a series dedicated to the very multifunctional Russian word “фиг”.

Сло́во фиг для ру́сского челове́ка не то́лько звучи́т, но и вы́глядит. Э́то жест – кула́к с больши́м па́льцем, просу́нутым ме́жду указа́тельным и сре́дним.

The word “фиг” for Russian people not only sounds but also looks. This is a gesture – a fist with a thumb pressed between the forefinger and the middle finger.

Russian gesture fist with thumb through fingers

В са́мом о́бщем смы́сле фиг (и́ли фи́га) означа́ет «ничего́». Таки́м о́бразом, назва́ние на́шего сего́дняшнего вы́пуска мо́жно интерпрети́ровать как «Ничего́ вы не полу́чите!».

In the most general sense, “фиг” (or “фига”) means “nothing”. Thus, the title of our today’s episode can be interpreted as “you will get nothing (from me)!”.

Сам жест испо́льзуется людьми́ ча́ще в конфли́ктных ситуа́циях, как выраже́ние отка́за, и сопровожда́ется выраже́нием фиг вам!, фиг тебе́! и́ли фи́гушки!. Жест испо́льзуется не всегда́, но е́сли уж испо́льзуется, то, как пра́вило, направля́ется оппоне́нту в лицо́.

The gesture itself is used by people more often in conflict situations, as an expression of refuse, and is accompanied by the phrase «Фиг вам!», «Фиг тебе!» и́ли «Фигушки!». The gesture is not always used, but if used, it is usually directed to the opponent in in the face.

Вне ситуа́ций спо́ра, сло́во мо́жет испо́льзоваться в таки́х выраже́ниях, как наприме́р, ни фига́:

Outside the dispute situations, the word can be used in such expressions as, for example, «ни фига»:

Весь день прошата́лась по магази́нам в по́исках прили́чного пальто́. Нет там ни фи́га.

I spent the whole day shopping around in search of a decent coat. There is nothing there.

Я так вчера́ напила́сь… ни фи́га не по́мню, что бы́ло… Я хоть себя́ прили́чно вела́?

I got so drunk yesterday … I remember nothing of what happened … Did I at least behave decently?

Ни фига́ себе́! – э́то ана́лог выраже́ния ничего́ себе́, кото́рое мы обсужда́ли в одно́м из про́шлых вы́пусков.

“Ни фига себе!” is an analog of the expression “ничего себе”, which we discussed in one of the past episodes.

Ни фига́ себе́ ско́лько сне́га навали́ло! Я таки́х сугро́бов в жи́зни не ви́дела.

Wow how much snow fell down! I have never seen such big snowdrifts in my life.

So, summarizing:

Фиг вам (и́ли фиг тебе́) – э́то в це́лом, дово́льно неве́жливое выраже́ние, осо́бенно, е́сли произноси́ть его́ серьёзным то́ном. В шу́тку ме́жду друзья́ми воспринима́ется поле́гче. Сопровожда́емое же́стом, выраже́ние уси́ливает своё значе́ние.

“Фиг вам” (or “фиг тебе”) is a generally impolite expression, especially if you pronounce it in a serious tone. As a joke between friends it is perceived easier. Accompanied by a gesture, the expression strengthens its meaning.

Ни фига́ и ни фига́ себе́ – э́то безоби́дные выраже́ния, кото́рые без пробле́м мо́жно испо́льзовать в разгово́рной ре́чи.

“Ни фига” and “ни фига себе” are harmless expressions that can be used without any problems in conversational speech.

За сим на сего́дня всё. Пусть не бу́дет в ва́шей жи́зни ни фи́га плохо́го, а то́лько хоро́шее! До ско́рой встре́чи!

On this I finish for today. May not be in your life nothing bad, but only good! See you soon!

      Hi Melih,

I’d love to be able to translate all this in English, but my skills are not so good 🙁
I could hire a professional translator, of course, but that would make the translations paid. Moreover I think that would be hard to translate some words and phrases here.

If someone is interested to translate it in English of any other language, I would surely publish his/her work here with all credits.

If you have any questions or don’t understand something, feel free to ask me in the comment section. More simple but not ideal way is Google Translator whose button you can find on the left. Good luck!
