До́брое, до́брое, до́брое!

Good, good, good!

Вы ве́рите в судьбу́? И́ли вы счита́ете, что ка́ждый сам кузне́ц своего́ сча́стья? А в уда́чу вы ве́рите? А в слу́чай?

Do you believe in fate? Or do you think that everyone is the architect of one’s own fortune? Do you believe in luck? And in coincidences?

Ка́ждый сам выбира́ет себе́, во что ве́рить. И́ли ве́рит в то, во что ве́рили его́ роди́тели и́ли ба́бушки с де́душками. И обы́чно, во что ве́рит, то и получа́ет. Пря́мо как в той стро́чке из Би́блии: “По ве́ре ва́шей да бу́дет вам”.

Everyone chooses for himself what to believe in. Or he believes in what his parents or grandparents believed. And usually, he gets exactly what he believes in. Just like in that line from the Bible: “According to your faith let it be to you”.

Есть ещё одна́ фра́за, кото́рая мне о́чень нра́вится. Звучи́т она́ так: “Как мы́слю, так и существу́ю”.

There is one more phrase that I really like. It sounds like this: “I live as I think”.

Ведь неоднокра́тно заме́чено, что чего́ бои́шься, то с тобо́й и происхо́дит. А когда́ ве́ришь в уда́чу, уда́ча отвеча́ет тебе́ взаи́мностью. Что же получа́ется, что ка́ждый сам выбира́ет себе́ судьбу́? А как же века́ми укорени́вшиеся в наро́де выраже́ния от судьбы́ не уйдёшь и́ли зна́чит, судьба́ така́я? Сло́жный вопро́с…

After all, it has been repeatedly observed that what you are afraid of is most likely to happen to you. And when you believe in good luck, the good luck reciprocates. So what, everyone chooses his own destiny? And how about the expressions that have been around for centuries “you can’t escape from your fate” or “it means that it’s his fate”? Difficult question…

Что́бы совсе́м не запу́таться, предлага́ю уйти́ от филосовских рассужде́ний в бо́лее привы́чное ру́сло: рассмотре́ть не́сколько “о́чень” ру́сских выраже́ний на за́данную те́му. А так как те́мой сегодняшей случи́лась быть судьба́, то и выраже́ния на́ши с не́ю бу́дут свя́заны непосре́дственно. Ита́к, встреча́йте:

In order not to get completely confused, I suggest that we leave the philosophical discourse aside and return to more familiar paths: let’s have a look a a few “very” Russian expressions on this topic. And since the subject of today’s happened to be the fate, our expressions will be directly related to it. So, meet:

– не судьба́
– будь что бу́дет
– была́ не была́

– Похо́же, не успе́ем мы сего́дня на матч.
– Ну что ж, зна́чит, не судьба́.

– It seems that we will not have time to see the match today.
– Well, it’s not out destiny then.

Ви́димо, не судьба́ мне сего́дня пора́ньше освободи́ться с рабо́ты…

Apparently, it’s not my destiny to leave the work earlier today …

Мы говори́м не судьба́, когда́ что́-то не получа́ется, и очеви́дно, не полу́чится. Э́та фра́за обы́чно сопровожда́ется гру́стным вздо́хом и печа́льным взгля́дом. 🙂

We say “it’s not one’s destiny” when something does not work out, and obviously it will not. This phrase is usually accompanied by a sad sigh and sad look. 🙂

Ла́дно, дава́йте рискнём, будь что бу́дет!

Okay, let’s take a chance, let be that as it may!

Эх, была́ не была́, пойду́ сдава́ть экза́мен пе́рвым!

Eh, what the hell, I’ll go to take the exam first!

Э́ти две фра́зы – не что ино́е, как выраже́ние реши́тельности рискну́ть. Обы́чно они́ произно́сятся по́сле не́которых разду́мий и́ли колеба́ний и сопровожда́ются взма́хом руко́й.

These two phrases are nothing else but an expression of decisiveness to risk. Usually they are pronounced after some thoughts or hesitation and are accompanied by a wave of the hand.

Я, пожа́луй, зако́нчу на сего́дня. А пе́ред э́тим хочу́ вам пожела́ть ве́рить в хоро́шее и не боя́ться де́лать вы́бор. Всем уда́чи! До ско́рого.
