Олух царя небесного

Describing poor people's mental abilities in Russian

Today we continue describing poor people’s mental abilities using Russian slang and common expressions. Some of them came to us from ages, others are quite modern and informal. So let’s begin!

Всем приве́т.

Hello everybody!

Продолжа́ем те́му, на́чатую на про́шлой неде́ле. Я обеща́ла познако́мить вас ещё с не́сколькими слова́ми и выраже́ниями, кото́рыми ру́сские характеризу́ют люде́й недалёкого ума́, т.е. не о́чень у́мных.

We continue the topic started last week. I promised to introduce you to a few other words and expressions with which Russians describe the people of the “mind not far off”, i.e. not very smart.

We will start with the word “олух” (idiot), which came into the Russian language from the folk speech and means a stupid and dumb person. Sometimes you can come accross the expression “an idiot of the heaven’s king”. According to the conventional wisdom, this combination appeared because of the belief that naive and trusting people are close to God (the king of heaven is God). In fact, no one is talking like that anymore (only, perhaps, someone’s great-grandmother and great-grandfather – the phrase has long gone out of fashion), but nevertheless the expression is quite well-known. Example:

Где́ вы нашли́ э́того о́луха? Он же ничего́ сде́лать сам не мо́жет!

Where did you find this blockhead? He can not do anything by himself!

Болва́н – изнача́льно на Ру́си э́то сло́во применя́лось для обозначе́ния деревя́нных и́ли ка́менных и́долов, а та́кже для разли́чного ви́да загото́вок (кста́ти, наприме́р, чи́стый CD и́ли DVD диск до сих пор называ́ют болва́нкой). Употребля́ется сло́во для обозначе́ния глу́пых и неве́жественных люде́й.

“Болван”: originally this word was used in Russia to designate wooden or stone idols, as well as for various kinds of billets (half-finished products) (by the way, for example, an empty CD or DVD disc is still called “болва́нка”). The word is used to refer to stupid and ignorant people.

Э́ти болва́ны всё сде́лали наоборо́т, тепе́рь на́до переде́лывать.

These idiots did everything the other way around, have to redo it now.

Больно́й на всю го́лову – а вот э́то уже́ совреме́нный вариа́нт, употребля́емый то́лько в разгово́рной ре́чи. Тако́й фра́зой опи́сывают неадекватных, ненорма́льных и сумасше́дших люде́й.

“Sick over the whole head” – this is a modern version, used only in colloquial speech. Such a phrase describes inadequate, abnormal and crazy people.

Он больно́й на всю го́лову, лу́чше не спорь с ним, себе́ доро́же.

He is a total wacko, better don’t argue with him, it’s not worth the trouble.

Больно́й на всю го́лову - Russian slang expression

Себе́ доро́же – расхо́жее выраже́ние, означа́ющее, что попы́тка испра́вить ситуа́цию приведёт к ещё бо́льшему вреду́ и́ли убы́ткам.

“Себе дороже” (more expensive for yourself) is a common expression meaning that an attempt to correct the situation will lead to even greater harm or loss.

Никому́ не нра́вится то, что происхо́дит, но пыта́ться что́-то измени́ть себе́ доро́же.

Russian Pod 101

Nobody likes what’s happening, but trying to change something doesn’t pay the trouble.

Всё на э́том. Вам жела́ю отли́чно провести́ вре́мя до на́шей сле́дующей встре́чи. Всем пока́!

That’s it for now. I wish you a great time till our next meeting. Bye everyone!
