The song “Kalinka” has long become one of the symbols of Russia. Often, it is mistakenly regarded as a folk song, however it is not the case. The song was written in 1860 by the composer and folklorist Ivan Larionov. It was first performed in Saratov as part of a theatrical entertainment that he had composed.
Soon Larionov gave this song to his friend – famous singer and founder of a folk song choir Agrenev-Slavyansky. The popularity of “Kalinka” began with this Slavic choir.
The world fame came to the song thanks to the composer and conductor, People’s Artist of the USSR, Professor Alexander Vasilievich Alexandrov (1883-1946). He created his own arrangement and included it in the repertoir of his Ensemble that performed the song abroad.
A folk stage dance performed to the melody of this song is also called “Kalinka”.
The word “kalinka” comes from the plant “kalina krasnaya” (viburnum). For the purposes of simplifying the translation, we kept the word “kalinka” untranslated.
