Summer in Russia is a vacation time. Very, very many people go for vacations to hot countries in summer.

Само́ собо́й, в то вре́мя как ва́ши колле́ги не́жатся на пля́же под со́лнышком и пьют охлаждённый сок коко́са, ва́ша у́часть очеви́дна: рабо́тать как па́па Ка́рло за себя́ и за всех отсу́тствующих.

Of course, while your colleagues are laying down on the beach under the sun and drinking chilled coconut juice, your fate is obvious: to work like Papa Carlo instead of them and all those absent.

Вот об э́том мы сего́дня и поговори́м… Нет, не о трудовы́х бу́днях тех, кому́ не повезло́, а об испо́льзованном мной выраже́нии: паха́ть, как па́па Ка́рло, что зна́чит “тяжело́ рабо́тать”.

Such a character as Papa Carlo, perhaps, is familiar to your from the story of Буратино (this is the Russian “brother” of Pinocchio). Why is it in the minds of the people that the father of Буратино was some hard worker is an interesting question … but we are not going to discuss it. Let’s just remember that “пахать как папа Карло” or “вкалывать как папа Карло” is a synonymous of hard work.
