How to Celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th

Below is a guest post from another popular site about Russian language – Learn Russian the Fun Way. I wholeheartedly join in the congratulations and wish to all women happinnes, love and joy! 🙂

Being a woman is wonderful! It’s even more wonderful to be a Russian woman on March 8th, when you are showered with love, affection, flowers, chocolates, and other wonderful things. March 8th is International Women’s Day and it’s one of the most popular holidays in Russia, and other Russian speaking countries.

Over recent years, International Women’s Day has lost its political meaning and became a day when men express their love and appreciation to the women around them. March 8th is a very special holiday for every woman in Russia. It’s a tradition to pamper women on this day.

On March 8th women receive flowers and possibly small gifts from their husbands, children, boyfriends, fathers, brothers, peers in school and male co-workers. You will notice a lot of women walking around with flowers on this day. Some offices even organize small parties to celebrate March 8th, or go out for lunch or dinner.

How to Wish Happy International Women’s Day in Russian

Very often on the cards dedicated to the International Women’s Day, you will see
8 Марта [vas’-MO-ye MAR-ta] March 8th
Восьмое марта [vas’-MOY] March 8th

С 8 Марта (с восьмым) марта [s vas’-MIM MAR-ta] Happy March 8th
С Днём 8-го (восьмого) марта [s DNYOM vas’-MO-va MAR-ta] Happy March 8th

If you would like to wish happy March 8th to a woman, here is what you will need to say:
Поздравляю тебя с восьмым марта [paz-drav-LYA-yoo tee-BYA s vas’-MIM MAR-ta] Wishing you Happy March 8th

You probably already know that you will use “тебя” when speaking to someone you know very well or someone you would usually address in “ты”, and you would use “вас” with someone you can address in “вы”.

[paz-drav-LYA-yoo s meezh-doo-na-ROD-nim ZHENS-keem DNYOM] Wishing you a happy International Women’s Day!

It’s very popular nowadays to write little congratulatory poems on a card. Of course, you can write your own poem, or find one online. Below are a few congratulations poems for inspiration, you can find more on
