Беситься с жиру

In this episode of the “Very Much Russian podcast” you will learn how to say that someone is too wealthy for his own good. 🙂

Всем здра́вствуйте!

Hello everybody!

На́ше сего́дняшнее выраже́ние, беси́ться с жи́ру, встреча́ется в ру́сском языке́ весьма́ ча́сто. Как в у́стной ре́чи, так и в произведе́ниях кла́ссиков. Наприме́р:

Our today’s expression, “to be furious from being fat”, is found in the Russian language very often. Both in the conversational speech and in the works of classics. For example:

Мы спи́ны на них гнём, до́хнем с го́лоду да с надса́ды, а они́ с жи́ру бе́сятся. (Ф. Гладков. Во́льница)

We are bending our backs for them, we die from hunger and exhaustion, and they don’t know what to do from being too wealthy. (F. Gladkov. Volnitsa)

Не обраща́йте внима́ния на э́тих люде́й… про́сто… они́ с жи́ру бе́сятся! (М. Го́рький. Сто́рож)

Do not pay attention to these people … it’s just… they are too wealthy for their own good! (M. Gorky. Guard)

Ду́маю, что э́ти выска́зывания кла́ссиков вряд ли помогли́ вам поня́ть, что же зна́чит э́та фра́за. Так что дава́йте разберём:

I think that these quotes of the classics hardly helped you to understand what this phrase means. So let’s look at it in more detail:

Сло́во беси́ться должно́ быть вам знако́мо из одного́ из предыду́щих подка́стов, где́ мы разбира́ли выраже́ние “меня́ бе́сит“. Беси́ться в буква́льном смы́сле зна́чит “быть в я́рости, зли́ться”. Наприме́р:

The word “беситься” should be familiar to you from one of the previous podcasts, where we analyzed the expression “меня бесит”. “Беситься” literally means “to be furious, angry”. For example:

Он бе́сится ка́ждый раз, когда́ ему́ начина́ют льстить.

He gets mad every time somebody starts flattering him.

Иногда́ слово беси́ться употребля́ется в смы́сле “игра́ть, забавля́ться”, осо́бенно, когда́ речь идёт о де́тях:

Sometimes it’s used in the sense of “to play, to have fun”, especially when it comes to children:

Ну хва́тит уже́ беси́ться, займи́тесь де́лом!

Enough jumping around already, get yourself busy!

Де́ти весь день беси́лись на све́жем во́здухе, неудиви́тельно, что они́ засну́ли сра́зу же, как оказа́лись в крова́ти.

The kids had fun in the open air all day long, no wonder they fell asleep as soon as they got in bed.

В да́нном же слу́чае беси́ться зна́чит скоре́е “быть неудовлетворённым, капри́зничать, привере́дничать”.

In this case, “беситься” means rather “to be unsatisfied, to be capricious, prideful”.

Жир же в на́шем сего́дняшнем выраже́нии подразумева́ет не настоя́щий жир, а “доста́ток, бога́тство, сы́тую, обеспе́ченную жизнь”.

“Fat” in our today’s expression means not real fat, but “prosperity, wealth, satisfied, wealthy life”.

Таким образом, беси́ться с жи́ру означа́ет что-то вроде “быть неудовлетворённым, не име́я на то основа́ний”. Наприме́р, придира́ться по пустяка́м, тре́бовать бо́льше, чем сле́дует, и́ли не знать, чем заня́ться, когда́ у тебя́ уже́ всё вро́де бы есть…

Thus, “беситься с жиру” means something like “to be unsatisfied without any reasons”. For example, carping on trifles, demanding more than one should, or not knowing what to do when you already have everything…

Вот не́сколько приме́ров из совреме́нности:

Here are some examples from modern times:

Де́ти у них соверше́нно избало́ванные и все их капри́зы э́то про́сто бе́шенство с жи́ру.

The children are completely spoiled and all their whims are just from being too well off.

Чего́ тебе́ не хвата́ет ещё? По-мо́ему, ты про́сто с жи́ру бе́сишься!

What else do you need, ah? In my opinion, you’re just too well off for your own good!

Заверша́я сего́дняшний вы́пуск, жела́ю вам беси́ться так, как э́то де́лают де́ти – не “с жи́ру”, а от души́! 🙂 Всем уда́чи и до ско́рой встре́чи!

Finishing today’s episode, I wish you to go crazy as children do it – not from being fat but wholeheartedly! Gook luck to everyone and see you soon!
