Заморить червячка

The topic of today’s episode was again suggested by one of the readers, Tally. Listen to the audio and learn what “заморить червячка” means in Russian.

Приве́т, друзья́.

Hello, friends!

“Го́лод не тётка, пирожка́ не подсу́нет”, – гласи́т изве́стная ру́сская посло́вица. Что зна́чит, чем голодне́е челове́к, тем ме́нее привере́длив он в еде́.

“Hunger is not your aunty, she will not offer you a pie”, says a well-known Russian proverb. Which means, the hungrier a person is, the less picky he is in food.

К сло́ву сказа́ть, оди́н мой друг расска́зывал мне о своём отце́, кото́рый гото́вил не ча́сто, но умудря́лся доводи́ть всю семью́ до тако́й сте́пени го́лода пока́ гото́вил, что когда́ наконе́ц-то наступа́ло вре́мя обе́да, всем каза́лось, что еда́ пригото́вленная отцо́м – са́мая вку́сная еда́ на све́те.

By the way, a friend of mine told me about his father, who did not cook very often, but managed to bring the whole family to such a degree of hunger while he was preparing the food, that when the time for dinner finally came, everyone thought that the food cooked by the father was the most delicious food in the world.

Как вы уже́ догада́лись, на́ша сего́дняшняя те́ма – го́лод, и выраже́ние, стоя́щее в заголо́вке подкаста име́ет непосре́дственное к нему́ отноше́ние. Сейча́с объясню́ почему́.

As you may have guessed, today’s topic is hunger, and the expression in the title of the podcast is directly relevant to it. Now I will explain why.

Давным давно́ среди́ ру́сских крестья́н была́ о́чень распространена́ боле́знь, вы́званная живу́щими в органи́зме червя́ми. Так что ка́ждый раз, когда́ у них возника́ло чу́вство го́лода, они́ ассоции́ровали его́ и́менно с э́тим неду́гом, счита́я, что некомфортные ощуще́ния го́лода вы́званы и́менно живу́щей в животе́ жи́вностью.

A long time ago, a disease caused by living inside worms was very common among the Russian peasants. So, every time they had a feeling of hunger, they associated it with this ailment believing that the uncomfortable sensations of hunger are caused by the creature living in the stomach.

Замори́ть червячка́ – зна́чит приня́ть определённое коли́чество пи́щи, доста́точное для того́, что́бы червячек нае́лся, и не донима́л бо́льше свои́ми поту́гами раздобы́ть пи́щу в и так пусто́м желу́дке рядово́го крепостно́го крестья́нина.

“To kill a worm” means to take a certain amount of food, sufficient to make the worm full and not pestering more with its attempts to get more food in the empty stomach of an ordinary serf peasant.

Э́то выраже́ние дошло́ до на́ших дней и испо́льзуется сего́дня соверше́нно здоро́выми людьми́, испы́тывающими чу́вство го́лода.

This expression has reached our days and is used today by perfectly healthy people who are hungry.

Дава́йте закрепи́м материа́л па́рой приме́ров:

Let’s reinforce the material with a couple of examples:

У вас есть что-нибу́дь червячка́ замори́ть?

Дава́й в кого́-нибу́дь кафе́ зайдём, червячка́ замори́м?

На сего́дня всё. Жела́ю вам отме́нного здоро́вья, и спаси́бо Tally за иде́ю сего́дняшнего вы́пуска. Всем пока́ 🙂
