Translation:
Without labor, you can not even catch a fish in the pond.
Meaning:
This is probably the one of the most famous Russian proverbs that every child learns from the early age. It means that nothing can be achieved without proper efforts. The English equivalentes of this proverb are:
- He who would catch fish must not mind getting wet.
- He that would have the fruit, must climb the tree.
- No pain, no gain.
- A cat in gloves catches no mice.
