Когда́ кто-то я́вно не в ду́хе и́ли ведёт себя́ стра́нно, про него́ говоря́т “кака́я му́ха тебя́ укуси́ла?“. Э́то выраже́ние, как и мно́гие в ру́сском языке́, заи́мствовано из францу́зского. Исто́ки фра́зы лежа́т в суеве́рных представле́ниях дре́вних люде́й о том, что в мух, слепне́й, жуко́в и други́х насеко́мых мог обора́чиваться дья́вол. Проника́я в рот, нос, у́хо и́ли укуси́в челове́ка, он де́лал его́ беснова́тым, заставля́я его́ выходи́ть из себя́, не́рвничать и́ли зли́ться.

When someone is clearly in a bad mood or behaves strangely, people says about him “what kind of fly did bite you?”. This expression, like many in Russian, is borrowed from the French. The sources of expression lie in the superstitious beliefs of the ancient people that the devil could turn in a fly, horsefly, beetle, and other insects. Having got into a person’s mouth, nose, or ear, or having bit a man, he could make him frantic, force him to get mad, nervous, angry.

Выраже́ние встать не с той ноги́ из той же се́рии. Ча́сто э́ту фра́зу мо́жно услы́шать про хму́рого и раздражи́тельного челове́ка. Происхожде́ние фра́зы свя́зано с дре́вними суеве́риями, утвержда́ющими, что́ то, с како́й ноги́ челове́к встаёт у́тром, повлия́ет на то, как сло́жится его́ день. Наверняка́ в ва́шем родно́м языке́ есть что́-то похо́жее. Как вариа́нт, мо́жно услы́шать встать с ле́вой ноги́, так как традицио́нно всё, что спра́ва, счита́ется хоро́шим, а то, что сле́ва – плохи́м.

The expression “get up from the wrong foot” is from the same series. Often this phrase can be heard about a gloomy and irritable person. The origin of the phrases is connected with the ancient superstitions asserting that the foot from which a person gets up in the morning influences how his day goes. Surely in your native language there is something like that. As an variation, you can hear “to get up from the left foot”, because traditionally everything that is in the right is considered to be good, and that’s in the left is bad.

Отсю́да и на́ше сле́дующее выраже́ние – ходи́ть нале́во, что зна́чит “изменя́ть”. Е́сли мужчи́на хо́дит нале́во, зна́чит, он изменя́ет жене́ и́ли подру́ге. Есть да́же така́я шутли́вая посло́вица, постро́енная на игре́ слов: у ка́ждого есть пра́во на “ле́во”, т.е. у ка́ждого есть пра́во изменя́ть. Спо́рное утвержде́ние, но хоро́ший приме́р для на́шего слу́чая.

Thus, our next expression: “to go to the left” which means “to be unfaithful”. If a man “goes to the left”, it means that he is cheating on his wife or girlfriend. There is even a joking saying built on a game of words: everyone has a right to “left”, that is, everyone has the right to be unfaithful. Very disputable statement, but a good example for our case.

И после́днее на сего́дня выраже́ние – два сапога́ па́ра – так говоря́т о лю́дях, кото́рые во мно́гом похо́жи друг на дру́га. Как пра́вило, име́ются ввиду́ отрица́тельные ка́чества.

And the last expression for today: “two boots make a pair” is about people who, in many ways, are alike. As a rule, it’s mostly about negative qualities.
