Отрываться

Russian slang for having fun

In today’s episode we are learning Russian slang for having fun. Enjoy!

Приве́т, приве́т!

Hello, hello!

Отрыва́ться, пожа́луй, одно́ из са́мых люби́мых заня́тий молодёжи. Будь ты ру́сский, не́мец и́ли италья́нец… “как вам иде́я уйти́ сего́дня в отры́в?” – “да то́лько предложи́те!”. Ула́мывать никого́ не на́до (ула́мывать – зна́чит угова́ривать).

To have fun (cut loose, have a blast), perhaps, is one of the most favorite occupations of young people. Whether you are Russian, German or Italian … ‘how do you like the idea to have a blast today?’ – ‘Of course, you just say a word!’. There is no need to persuade anybody (‘уламывать’ means to persuade).

Обрати́мся к приме́рам:

Let’s look at the examples:

Дава́йте оторвёмся сего́дня по-взро́слому!

Let’s have a serious blast today!

Зря ты вчера́ с на́ми не пошёл, мы здо́рово оторва́лись.

It’s a shame you did not come with us yesterday, we had a real blast.

Е́сли кто ещё не догада́лся, что име́ется ввиду́, расска́зываю:

If someone has not guessed yet what it all means, I’ll help you:

Оторва́ться, и́ли уйти́ в отры́в зна́чит “повесели́ться, рассла́биться, погуля́ть, покути́ть”. Как пра́вило, всё э́то сопровожда́ется вы́пивкой и та́нцами, хотя́ э́то во́все не обяза́тельно. Как у нас говоря́т, ка́ждый по-сво́ему схо́дит с ума́, а зна́чит и отрыва́ется ка́ждый по-сво́ему.

‘Оторваться’ or ‘уйти в отрыв’ means to ‘have some fun, cut loose, have a blast’. As a rule, all this is accompanied by drinking and dancing, although this is not necessarily. As we say, everyone goes crazy in his own way, and hence everyone cuts loose in his own way too.

Отрыва́ться – э́то несоверше́нный вид, оторва́ться – соверше́нный.

‘Отрываться’ is an imperfective verb, ‘оторва́ться’ is a perfective verb.

Само́ сло́во оторва́ться означа́ет “отдели́ться от чего́-ли́бо”. И действи́тельно, уходя́ в отры́в отрыва́емся от действи́тельности, от повседне́вных забо́т, а кто-то от себя́ самого́

The word ‘оторваться’ means ‘to separate from anything, to break away’. Indeed, when cutting loose we break away from reality, from everyday cares, and some people from themselves.

Отрыва́йтесь ча́ще! Жизнь да́на нам не то́лько ра́ди исполне́ния каки́х-то обя́занностей, кото́рые мы счита́ем ва́жными. Жизнь да́на для удово́льствия, так что не теря́йте вре́мени зря, и уходи́те в отры́в при пе́рвой возмо́жности! Наприме́р, в ближа́йшие выходны́е. 🙂

Cut it loose more often! Life is given to us not only for the sake of fulfilling some duties that we consider important. Life is given for pleasure, so do not waste your time, and break away at the first opportunity! For example, this weekend. 🙂

Russian Pod 101

А я на э́том говорю́ вам до свида́ния, до сле́дующей ско́рой встре́чи. Пока́!

And I’m saying goodbye on this note, until next time. Bye!
