It's enough to make a chicken laugh... in Russian

Говоря́т, рак — не ры́ба, а ку́рица — не пти́ца. Поня́тно почему́ говоря́т, и мы с э́тим утвержде́нием спо́рить не бу́дем. Мы воспо́льзуемся э́тим предло́гом, что́бы вы́учить сего́дня не́сколько ру́сских идио́м с уча́стием ку́рицы и ра́ков.

They say that crayfish is not a fish, and a chicken is not a bird. It is clear why they say that, and we will not argue with this statement. We will use this pretext to learn some Russian idioms involving chicken and crayfish today.

Начнём мы с выраже́ния ку́рам на смех, кото́рое опи́сывает что́-то неле́пое и бессмы́сленное. Наприме́р:

We will begin with the expression “for chickens to laugh”, which describes something absurd and meaningless. For example:

Все их жа́лкие поту́ги вы́дать жела́емое за действи́тельное про́сто ку́рам на смех!

All their miserable attempts to present wishful thinking as reality is enough to make a cat laugh!

Сле́дующее на́ше выраже́ние – де́нег ку́ры не клюют. Е́сли у кого́-то де́нег ку́ры не клюют, зна́чит их у него́ о́чень мно́го. Э́тот фразеологи́зм отно́сится к тому́ ро́ду шутли́вых выраже́ний, в кото́рых отрица́ется то, что и так никогда́ не быва́ет в реа́льной жи́зни (ку́ры в действи́тельности никогда́ не клюют де́нег). Приме́ры:

Our next expression is “chickens do not peсk the money”. If someone has the chickens that do not peck the money, it means this someone has a lot of money. This phraseology belongs to a kind of playful expressions in which they deny the fact that already never happens in real life (in reality chickens never peck money). Examples:

Де́нег у него́ ку́ры не клюют, поэ́тому он всегда́ пла́тит за друзе́й в рестора́не.

He is rolling in money, so he always pays for his friends in a restaurant.

– Он по го́роду на Бе́нтли разъезжа́ет, а на да́че у него́ вертолётная площа́дка предусмо́трена.
– Коне́чно, е́сли бы у меня́ де́нег ку́ры не клева́ли, я бы себе́ ещё и поса́дочную по́лосу провёл.

– Around the city he drives on Bentley, and at the dacha he has a helicopter pad.
– Of course, if I was rolling in money, I would have made myself a runway.

На э́том мы зака́нчиваем с ку́рицами и пла́вно перехо́дим к ра́кам.

On this we wrap it up with the chickens and smoothly move to the crayfish.

Когда́ рак на горе́ сви́стнет. Сино́нимом э́того выраже́ния явля́ется по́сле до́ждичка в четве́рг. О́бразное значе́ние обо́их фраз постро́ено на нару́шенной ло́гике: рак не уме́ет свисте́ть, а до́ждичка в четве́рг мо́жет совсе́м и не быть. Поэ́тому о́ба выраже́ния испо́льзуются в отноше́нии собы́тий, кото́рые скоре́е всего́ никогда́ не произойду́т:

“When the crayfish whistles on the mountain”. The synonym of this expression is “after the rain on Thursday”. The visual meaning of both phrases is based on broken logic: the crayfish can not whistle, and there might be no rain on Thursday at all. Therefore, both expressions are used for events that are most likely never to occur:

– Я всё жду, когда́ они́ извиня́тся.
– Да по́сле до́ждичка в четве́рг.

– I’m still waiting for them to apologize.
– Aha, after the rain on Thursday.

– Ты когда́ свою́ маши́ну с тротуа́ра уберёшь?
– Когда́ рак на горе́ сви́стнет.

– When will you take your car off the sidewalk?
– When the crayfish whistles on the mountain.

И последне на сего́дня выраже́ние – на безры́бье и рак ры́ба, кото́рое выступа́ет как бы исключе́нием из вышеупомя́нутого пра́вила “рак – не ры́ба”. Как мо́жно догада́ться, выраже́ние ссыла́ется на тот факт, что в недоста́тке чего́-то всё приобрета́ет но́вый смысл. 🙂

And the last expression for today is “when no fish even a crayfish is a fish”, which appears as an exception of the above mentioned rule “crayfish is not a fish”. As you might have guessed, the expression refers to the fact that in the lack of something everything acquires a new meaning. 🙂

Возмо́жно, э́то не лу́чший вы́бор за э́ти де́ньги, но на безры́бье и рак ры́ба.

Perhaps this is not the best choice for this money, but better a small fish than an empty dish.

Он никогда́ не́ был согла́сен с выраже́нием “на безры́бье и рак ры́ба“, а поэ́тому не бра́лся за сомни́тельные прое́кты, да́же е́сли нужда́лся в деньга́х.

He never agreed with the expression “when no fish even a crayfish is a fish” and therefore did not undertake shady projects even if he needed money.
