It’s getting cold here and I decided to dedicate today’s episode to the cold. Learn some Russian slang describing cold and freezing weather from today’s episode of the podcast.

Hey everyone.

Do you know what “dubak” is?

“Дуба́к” is what happens here in Russia during the winter. In certain parts of the country this happens in summertime as well. Specifically here in St.-Petersburg this occurs for half the year or even longer. Have you guessed what I’m talking about?

It’s really freezing today, I should have worn warmer clothes.

Close the door behind you, please. It’s so freezing here plus you’re walking in and out!

“Дубак” is when it’s cold. It is a noun but it can be used as other parts of speech, for example:

I’m absolutely freezing, can we go somewhere to warm up?

It’s pretty chilly in yours (at your house), is the heating not working or something?

Admittedly, I personally use this word every time the thermometer drops below 15 degrees Celsius, though there are people who don’t mind really cold weather. I’ve always been impressed by the so-called “моржи” (“морж” is in fact an animal – a walrus, but we also use this term for people who go bathing in ice holes). I could never force myself to go into icy water, it’s such a “дубак” there!

Russian Pod 101

And you, do you like winter?

I wish you do not freeze and I bid you farewell for today. Bye!
